sse - cruise to lake tekapo main page site links
SUNDAY, 23 JANUARY 2005
After a month or so of planning/notice the cruise to Lake Tekapo finally went ahead on the day it was planned. The Urban Cruisers car club had organised the whole thing but apart from one person from the aforementioned club and another from a Mitsubishi club it was basically a Southern Skylines meet with seven Skylines and a Prelude.

The Dunedin peeps (R32 Skyline GTS-4, two GTS-t's and a Honda Prelude) met up at the usual spot (Ben and Reece's place) and headed over towards the new carwash place in the city. After cleaning the cars and taking a couple of pics we eventually took off and by then it was about 9:30am i think?

At 11 or 12 something we stopped in Oamaru for lunch at KFC (not before going around one of the roundabouts three or four times - by then i was starting to get a little dizzy). Eventually we took off and headed to Timaru to the Shell/Burger King service station to fill up with petrol. One of my back tires was deflated quite a bit some more air was pumped into it and all was sweet.

We got into Washdyke and turned off on the Mount Cook road thingy which led us through Pleasant Point, Cave etc until we got to Fairlie where we waited for the Christchurch peeps to arrive.

While waiting there we saw an awesome Lamborghini Countach 5000S drive past us and thankfully Reece got a picture of it (below) before it went out of view (unfortunately i'm in the pic too). It could of been a replica but it didn't really sound like one (saw it on the way home when we were heading to Omarama/Otamatata and it sounded pretty mean).

AAANNNNNYYYYWWHHHOOOO. The Chch group eventually arrived after about 10 minutes or so and then we all headed off to Tekapo where we stopped outside the main shopping center thingy until we decided on a place to go. Once that was done we headed off to the dam (?), slash, power station to take a few pics on the very lumpy/rocky surface. Then we went back to Tekapo, albeit a different and much longer way.

A camping ground beside the lake was the next photo shoot location (Andy's front bumper scooping up a decent amound of sand ;)). Reeces dog Jack had fun picking up/chasing sticks (reasonably big ones too) and carrying them around, running into cars with them and trying to clothesline people (me and Ben had to duck to avoid getting hit while sitting on the grass).

After that we went back to the shopping center and said our goodbyes, the Christchurch guys heading East and Dunedinites heading West (just for a bit of a sightseeing detour) and it was a good idea because the scenery was awesome (almost as good as Queenstown). You could even see the top of Mount Cook across one of the lakes we drove past which was pretty cool.

After petrolling at Challenge in Oamaru we all took off and i decided just to cruise back at my usual pace and by the time i got to Palmerston i was driving by myself. Eventually i arrived back at about 11pm i think, $90+ out of pocket due to all the petrol used and numbish ears/hearing for a while, after driving for over ten hours with the drone of the exhaust. But it was all worth it. :)
